Cardiovascular disease, My Research. By Jamie Kraft, 2021
Patient by patient, day by day
Cardiovascular systems in disarray
Long long ago, a lesion was initiated
Endothelial dysfunction was perpetuated
High cholesterol circulates
Macrophages accumulate
The plaque continues to build up
Until it is about to erupt
Becoming more difficult to move
But the upcoming bypass surgery will surely soothe
Finally time for the big event
But first we must get their informed consent
How fortunate am I
That these patients donate to my supply
Their neutrophils are isolated
Then lipoxin-stimulated
They transmigrate across lymphatic cells
And are counted in all of the wells
I approach the data analysis with caution
I may have a golden goose with the lipoxin
Is that significance I see?
Could this really contribute to my PhD!
My heart did a flip
But, oh boy, now it’s time to write the manuscript…

Science Slam, by Sylvia Mueller
So three minutes is all I have,
To explain the work of the Börgeson Lab,
Through mine own fault I had not much time,
To prepare much more than this simple rhyme,
But never the less I shall persevere,
So to me please lend thyne ears,
I promise It shan’t be for naught,
You see our work starts with this simple thought,
With obesity comes metabolic ill-health,
And of complications there are a wealth,
From diabetes of type two,
To coronary disease it just won’t do,
For these problems the starting issue,
May originate in the adipose tissue,
And infiltration of macrophages,
That seem to hang around for ages,
And inflammation is unresolved,
The reason for which is still unsolved,
Now personally my work takes aim,
And asks, is the lymphatic system to blame?
Is the exit route for these cells impaired?
Through some mechanism still undeclared?
Others have shown that the phenotype,
For these lymphatic cells ain’t right,
But what´s the function of this alteration?
And how might it affect leucocyte migration?
To investigate this I have two years,
Unless more funding magically appears.
But of course I am not alone,
And it is my colleges who are the real back bone,
For the past year or so they’ve been busy as bees,
And ran a proteomics profile with ease,
On samples collected from a whole bunch of patients,
And for much of our work this shall be our foundation,
As we use all of this blood we have frozen,
To assess the functions of the cells we have chosen,
Those we feel may play a big part,
On the problems seen in the liver and heart,
From apoptosis to cytokine production,
We work towards pathology reduction.
With a spectrum of methods this work will be done,
A variety of ways in which we’ll have fun,
A transmigration assay is our current pet,
Though we haven’t started yet,
And in our planning we have been prudent,
To delegated a that to our masters’ student,
And staining of a tissue section,
And cell culture with narry infection,
And cell enrichment and high through-put screening,
And current bi-weekly laboratory cleaning,
We hope to have much success,
And not cause ourselves to much distress.
But a final point I’d like to make,
A fact that you away should take,
Is for this chronic inflammation,
We may be testing its salvation,
As lipoxin A4 could well reverse,
Those processes that make things worse,
For those who with obesity suffer,
You heard me right I did not stutter,
A specialized pro-resolving mediator,
An adiponectin independent generator,
Of an anti-inflammatory adipose setting,
And improved metabolic health let’s not be forgetting,
But for now that’s all still to come,
So never fear and don’t be glum,
For this has been my science slam christening,
And to you my friends, thank you for listening.
