Openings for Doctoral Candidates.
We are recruiting an outstanding candidate for the international PhD program at the University of Gothenburg (Sweden) for the Degree of Doctor in Medical Science. The four-year program corresponds to studies of 240 credits in total. The studies comprise of carrying out a scientific project in the area of obesity-related diseases and inflammation. The project includes presenting research findings at scientific conferences and attending seminars at the student's department. In addition to this, the studies include successfully completing courses (at least 30 credits). The doctoral student must also independently write a scientific compilation thesis corresponding to at least 120 credits.
Project details: ‘Obesity poses one of the most serious public health challenges’, according to WHO. Indeed, obesity related co-morbidities substantially increase mortality. However, 30% of obese subjects are ‘metabolically healthy obese’, i.e. lacking metabolic disorders (diabetes, dyslipidemia and hypertension). Identification of the mechanisms that promote the metabolically healthy phenotype will be crucial to counter the public health burden of obesity, and forms the scientific question of the scientific research project.
The long-term goal of the project is to identify key determinants that promote metabolic health. The aim will be pursued using interdisciplinary and translational research. The project combines pre-clinical with clinical research. Key methods that will be used in combination with cell culture include flow cytometry, in vivo injections, microsurgery in mice, as well as explant cultures of human biopsies.
To apply, provide the following:
