In order to achieve our translational goals, we collaborate closely with the clinical research platform “Gastlab” and Ville Wallenius. In addition to his research activities as an Associate Professor, Dr. Wallenius is a specialist surgeon at Sahlgrenska University Hospital. By collaborating, we are able to share access to a limited pool of patient samples, and translating our experimental findings to human biology via so called “proof of concept” studies performed using ex vivo cultures of human tissue biopsies.
- “Our projects complement each other extremely well, says Dr Wallenius. We both study obesity-related complications, but with slightly different perspective. In my research I investigate whether obesity-related inflammation starts in the small intestine, while Dr. Börgeson investigates anti-inflammatory therapeutics in the different organ biopsies we collect (fat, liver and intestine). It is an ideal opportunity to collaborate and build on each other's skills.”
- “It's very stimulating to work with Dr. Wallenius, says Dr Börgeson. Through our collaboration with Gastlab, we are privileged to work in a clinical research environment that allows us to drive the translational research program, from bench-to-bedside.”
